Roland Barthes was born in Normandy in 1915. He studied semiotics and studying signs which he found very useful. He explained that cultural myths were second- order signs or connotations. A dark bottle of wine is merely a fermented, alcoholic beverage but is portayed as 'healthy' and 'relaxing' without anyone saying. This brought him to a similar thoery, the Marxist Theory.

Learning about Semiotics

Ferdinand D Saussure was born in Geneva in 1857. He started teaching course of general Linguistics in 1906. He came up with the Laryngeal Theory, trying to explain how he was able to make systematic and predictive hypotheses from known linguistic data to unknown. The success of tthis was discovered some 50 years later.

Quote - "In language there are only differences, and no positive terms."
